2024 Pinkbike Awards: Innovation of the Year Winner

The Innovation of the Year award goes to... e*thirteen Sidekick Hub! Earlier this year, Sidekick entered the market, and secured its place as the most elegant take on chain-force mitigation we've seen to date... It significantly changes suspension feel, reduces drivetrain feedback, and quiets the bike a bit... I've been impressed with the ride characteristic changes it offers to a variety of suspension designs, and expect that the hub will be a semi-common addition to certain builds that are catering towards downhill performance. Worth a look, if you're building up a fancy wheelset for a bike that could do with a bit less feedback through the feet.

REVIEW - E13 Sidekick Hub

Best New Mountain Bike Products of 2024 - Vital MTB Gear Show | 6:36 Sidekick Hubs

Three products helped my riding more than anything else in 2024, here’s why they get my vote for Gear of the Year

Downhill racing drives mountain bike innovation like nothing else, and my Gear of the Year 2024 comes straight off the gnarliest tracks on the circuit. I’m talking about e*thirteen’s revolutionary new Sidekick hub, it decouples the drivetrain, reduces chain growth and makes my suspension feel so good it was almost ‘chainless’... Yes, e*thirteen’s Sidekick does what it says on the tin and makes my bike feel smoother, faster and more like it has that chainless feeling when you’re not pedalling.I slotted a set of Sylvan carbon wheels with their Sidekick hub onto a Santa Cruz Tallboy and it seemed to give that short travel machine extra travel. And most impressively of all it felt like the rear wheel tracks better under braking too. This final part gives loads more control on steeper tracks where any shorter travel trail bike usually feels most hamstrung by less suspension capability. It’s a great have-your-cake-and-eat-it feeling because you still get to ride around on a peppy, tighter-feeling bike that gives all that trail bike energy I really enjoy.

“Like riding chainless” – e*thirteen’s Sidekick decoupling hub irons out the trails, but XC riders will probably hate it

From the first lap, the Sidekick hub significantly changed my Santa Cruz Tallboy’s ride feel, it clearly delivers that chainless feeling. It also makes the bike roll noticeably faster, my favourite test track was smoother and quieter down the first fast straight, one that’s absolutely laced with roots and square edge hits. With Sidekick, the Tallboy shrugged off one particularly big root on my test track that’s always impossible to go light over. No tyre bottoming out, no violent clanging of the rear tyre hanging up and no jabbing at the feet. The rear wheel just seemed to ride straight through it and over it, which was a shock having ridden this section on most test bikes I’ve had in recent years. None have absorbed this particular section so smoothly and quietly, regardless of how much travel they have or whether they are light and human powered or heavy and electric-assisted.

Test – e*thirteen Sidekick Flux Enduro

In our first testing period, the e*thirteen Sidekick Flux Enduro Wheel set left us impressed! Once you adapted to the difference when getting on the pedals, you will embrace the calmer ride on your bike. In combination with the compliance of the Flux rims, you will use a wheel set, which will make you safer, faster and more relaxed on the bike. Traversing root sections or hitting rock gardens are easier to handle with the bike, which suspension can work more freely, and you focus just on your line. A broad spectrum of riders will benefit from this. Weekend warrior all the way to a racer. This product will be a great match for people who not only like to go fast, but also do it on a bike which may be slightly undertravelled on rough trails. Sidekick makes for the feel of more travel, without sacrificing the direct feel of this kind of bike. It’s impressive!

New e*thirteen Sidekick hub tested: The anti-pedal kickback hub

With the Sidekick hub, e*thirteen presents an exciting solution that effectively prevents pedal kickback. The extent of the system's effect depends on the bike in question. However, it can allow the chassis to operate noticeably more freely and - with sufficient chain tension - ensures a very quiet and smooth ride. It is also worth highlighting how comparatively simple the system is. Switching between the different degrees of freedom is also very easy and can be done without any problems on the trail - but you have to open the plugged-in freewheel to do this. If you don't want the anti-pedal kickback function, you unfortunately need a complete second rear wheel. Nothing can be said about durability after the test period so far, but it should be on the level of a normal rear wheel hub...
